Safe Motherhood Program director, Professor Suellen Miller, is a lead author for the Lancet’s 2016 Maternal Health series with her paper “Beyond too little, too late and too much, too soon: a pathway towards evidence-based, respectful maternity care worldwide” along with co-author Michelle Skaer of the Safe Motherhood Program. The paper highlights the persistence of harmful practices and inequitable care: over-medicalization of birth that leads to excessive rates of caesarean sections and inductions, and inadequate or poor quality of care that can be found even in disadvantaged populations in high-income countries.
