NASG Advocacy & Action Network

The NASG saves mothers' lives. The NASG is a key tool in reducing mortality from postpartum hemorrhage, one of the leading causes of maternal death. In collaboration with CHAI & Lwala Community Alliance, UCSF Safe Motherhood has established the NASG Advocacy & Action Network (NAAN). NAAN gathers experts, experienced providers, and groups interested in launching new projects and scaling up the NASG. NAAN meets every other month via Zoom to work towards the following goals:

  • Advocacy towards greater availability and scale-up of the NASG and complementary interventions
  • Sharing expertise around effective NASG introduction and existing training resources
  • Identification of potential funding sources as well as partnerships for applications for funding

NAAN Meeting, March 31st, 2025

Presenter: Germán Gallego, MD, MSc, Consultor en Ministerio de Salud y Protección Social de Colombia

Dr. Germán Gallego, an OB/GYN is in the Ministry of Health in Colombia. Dr. Gallego discussed how surveillance of “near miss” instances where mothers almost died in childbirth led to the development and distribution of kits containing drugs, supplies, and tools that can help providers prevent maternal mortality. These Obstetric Emergency Kits did not initially include the NASG, but through Dr. Gallego’s advocacy, NASGs were included. Dr. Gallego discussed the challenges of NASG implementation and usage, such as ensuring proper NASG training for all providers and facilities. Dr. Gallego has also been involved in efforts to improve the data monitoring of maternal safety in Colombia. Current monitoring indicates improved maternal safety and reduced maternal death across Colombia.

Presenter: María Fernanda Escobar, MD

Dr. María Fernanda Escobar is an OBGYN at Fundación Valle del Lili focusing on obstetric emergency care. Dr. Fernanda detailed her 15 years of experience using the NASG, sometimes in conjunction with other devices like the uterine balloon tamponade. These interventions, as well as the use of standardized care checklists, have resulted in a reduced risk of massive postpartum hemorrhage and reduced need for major surgery. Dr. Fernanda detailed how the NASG is particularly useful in scenarios where a blood transfusion is not immediately available and that the NASG can be applied as early as 15 minutes after the administration of uterotonic drugs if the patient is still in shock. Importantly, Dr. Fernanda highlighted that the NASG has proven to be a cost-effective intervention for PPH.
